The story of a family who turned a dream into reality

A hotel in Ortisei that brings together South Tyrolean tradition, family-run hospitality, and the authentic spirit of Val Gardena.

When Giorgio and Maria Hell decided to build and manage a 'Garni' that combined modernity with tradition in a central Ortisei location – where winter days are spent skiing and summers unfold amidst lush greenery – they knew they were creating something meaningful, even if they could not foresee the recognition that this place would gain over the years. The development of the Garni bears the distinct mark of their daughter Carla, who devoted her commitment, care, and a deep sense of responsibility to it. Today, the legacy continues with Carla’s son Luca, who is entirely dedicated to hospitality and high-quality cuisine, supported by his partner Maria. As time passes, many things change, yet love, daily dedication, and the enduring value of family tradition remain. The name 'Hell' is an old Bavarian surname that found its home south of the Brenner Pass. Three generations and a lasting passion come together in this name, which is the beating heart of this story.

What is the meaning of the 'T' in the coat of arms of Hotel Hell in Ortisei?

Many guests ask us this question when they notice the emblem decorating the walls of the hotel. This historical symbol is documented in Der neue Siebmacher, one of the most authoritative works on heraldry. It depicts Saint Anthony's cross, topped with a golden six-pointed star, on a blue background. The emblem first appears on the tombstone of Michael Hell, now embedded in the bell tower of the parish church in Aichach, Bavaria. The Hell family once held significant importance in that region: from 1513 to 1522, Georg Hell even served as the town’s mayor. How the Hell family eventually arrived in Val Gardena remains a mystery. What is certain, however, is that our hotel still proudly bears their name and coat of arms.
